How busy have you been since the voice? What what is what is your schedule like? Is are there lulls? Are you constantly traveling?

No, it's it's ups and downs, it's pi it's peaks and valleys, man. I um so uh right after the voice, which would have been so this is my 10 year 10 year off of the voice with this year. Wow. Crazy that it's been 10 years, but um I mean right after the voice, it was just bang, bang, bang. It was just hot and heavy. Everything was just rolling, and we were just in cruise control uphill, just going, you know what I mean? And then you know, the uh the novelty of that over a couple years starts to kind of dwindle a little bit, and you kind of go through ups and downs, and um we stay consistently busy, you know. There will be months where we have more paychecks than others, but join the club.

I just started to start my own business, and like one week it looks like I won the Powerball, and the next week it looks like I'm not buying food. So exactly.

Now, a lot of folks who were on the voice, obviously they didn't get as high and as far as you did, but they do the voice, they have their moment, and then it seems like we don't hear from them anymore. But with you, let me tell you how successful you are. You might not know this. Let me tell you how successful you are.

That's right. How did you look at that picture and see Josh in that? His girlfriend did. She was like, He's not what it looks like. Yeah. So Jagger's down in the panhandle of Florida. Janice in Long Island. Yeah. Like I want a look. It's quite a look. Like, so just so you know, I mean, I was working on getting this interview, and then obviously I pawned off to Jagger at some point to finish up the details and everything. And it wasn't until yesterday I get this long email from Jagger, congratulations on booking an established country artist. I was like, did he just realize that? And then I realized it's because of how excited that his girlfriend got that he realized, like, you have made your mark on the map. Did I hear you were in Iceland or something the other weekend?

Uh I flew through Iceland. I was there for about an hour and a half, and then we went to Norway. So um I was, yeah, I was we uh I had a there was a country festival, a two-day festival I played over there uh last weekend. We were there for five days, and um my wife's parents came down to from Pennsylvania, they're still living out tuna. Um they came down from uh Pennsylvania to watch the kids, and we were in uh Norway for like five days. Oh fun.

You came back from the voice, and you know, you were appearing at the ballpark, you're appearing at uh kind of like me now, outside of radio. I'm showing up wherever they want me and doing whatever they want me to do and and performing, but I'm not going to Iceland yet. I'm not like you're all over the country. You're doing things in uh in other countries. This is crazy.

Yeah, you know, I'm trying to uh trying to stay relevant. I've kind of been on a uh I don't know, I've been in a weird spot um the past uh four about three or four years. I um my wife and I have two kids, a four-year-old and a two-year-old. And um I don't know if I just if I was just going through like a male postpartum like insanity thing. I have no idea, but like for the past four years I just kinda I don't know, I've been on a little bit of a hiatus and um holding my kids for the first time really just like I didn't you hear it all the time, like you feel fall as soon as you hold them, you'll fall in love with those right away.

But I didn't realize like how infatuated, like it was it it kind of fucked me up, to be honest with you. Like in a good way, right? But like so I uh I like this better than the guitar.

Yeah, I'm used to holding a guitar and I'm like, this is a I can't play you. I can't wait.

But you did it right, man, because you don't want to look back and be like, man, I wish I had spent that time with my kids when they were young and not touring Wisconsin. Like, you did it right. I I don't know. I can see like mentally you're saying like you weren't feeling it, and that's a good spot to like not do it anymore, too.

Wow. Um whereas the past you know 12 years, I've been down in Nashville for 12 years, where the past these past you know 12 years I've been infatuated with music, and I still am. I just I'm figuring out um how much of it I still want to do because I want to see I get to see my kids every day. I probably get to see my kids more than most artists do, which is um, which is by choice. And um, and there's opinions and um you know thoughts that people have about that, and you should be doing this, and you should, and you should, and I'm like, hey, you should do is what you're telling us. Yeah, break out of the show.

Do you have like people on your team who kind of give you a hard time about that, like managers, agents, people are like, no, you gotta be on the road, man. You gotta be out there, you gotta be uh getting more fans, making more money.

Yeah, it's more, it's more of like uh my my like my peers and my buddies and shit, they're like, and it's mostly just like, hey, quit fucking around, we want to go play music. Yeah. Yeah. Fans are gonna forget. No, Nash, Nashville's very much a uh Nashville's very much a um you should be doing this type of town because that's what everybody else is doing. And I've never I've never really been that way, just in general. I've always felt like I've kind of been a misfit. Um and not in a bad way. I think it's a good thing to you know, you want to be different and stand out, but also the town is like But also you see artists get signed that are like exactly the same as the other artists before them, and you're like, so you want me to be different, but I don't okay. Yeah. So yeah, I've kind of just I've kind of been like a little bit of a misfit. So that doesn't really that doesn't really uh bug me as much. I just I do what I want, and if people don't like it, they you know that's a that's a them problem, you know what I mean? I I want to be with my kids. I get to write songs and see my kids every day.

So do you have a day job as uh because I'll tell you right now, this this business I'm doing, like I said, some weeks it's fantastic, other weeks it's like yeah. So I actually work remotely from my house. I get to stay at home too uh for the American Red Cross Monday through Friday, and that ties me up during the week. But like I need things like health insurance.

Yeah, actually, I want to get to uh signing you up for uh I just got rid of my other one, so I'm gonna do it. Yeah, we're gonna certify an E D tester. I got you all locked up here. I just need your car to check you out in my cart. Um I mean, you need basic things in life, and as much as I love running my business and being creative with these friends of mine, and like I need to like still get health insurance, like I said. Do you find yourself in that position or do you how do you just focus on it?

No, I uh I'm I'm full-time. I've been I I've been very, very fortunate to so uh we moved down here in uh 2014. And it took me about a month to kind of get into to get my foot in the door. Um and then since then I've been very fortunate uh to be able to play music for a living for the past uh 12 years. So my day job uh is um if I'm not working, I just my day job is my kids. But like that does that health insurance and and and paying out of pocket for stuff, you know, being uh a sole proprietor is it's tough. You know, you gotta you know, that's it normally will come out of your paycheck and then exactly you know, but we don't get a lot of paychecks, so yeah, you gotta pay out of pocket. And it's a pain, it really is, you know, but like you know, you you you just gotta figure it out. And if this is, you know, if being an entrepreneur is what you truly want to do, you just gotta figure it out. Yeah.

No, and I respect that uh, first of all, the mindset about you know, you being a father and a male and you know, an artist, and just really finding the dedication in your kids and and being vocal about the the shift in your mindset, you know, when your kids were born. I think that that vulnerability is kind of lacking just in the male community in general, let alone as an artist. And I think also your music really speaks to that kind of like genuine rawness too, right? Like a lot of musicians, they talk about blue collar in their music, right? But not all have experienced it. And I think that kind of ties into what you were saying, because I'm a misfit too, right? Like you tell me to go left, fuck you, I'm going right. Yeah, 100%.

Exactly. These these two know it for me. And so, like, I think that that really just like speaks to why you are having this sustainable career, is because you are able to lay it all out there and be true to yourself, be authentic. And like you're saying, like, I I think about myself a lot. Like, I say a lot of things that I know people want to say they're thinking about, but they don't feel like they can say because society keeps you into a box. So I love that about you, but I will I I really wanted to just ask like you take the boy out of PA, but you can't take the PA out of the boy. Oh, yeah. No, even in the promo that you sent, like the bottle of corona. I I loved the like stupid S T O O P I D shirt you had on. So, like, what's something that just like screams to you or screams to someone else being down in Tennessee, like, no, this boy's from Pennsylvania? Like, what's something that you just like can't let go of?

Um, so when I first when we first moved down here, I um I would just I would go play sh uh shows downtown on Broadway and just a cut off in my camo shorts and boots like I normally would like do back home. And people would just be my buddy one time, it was years ago, but he looked at me and he's like, What the fuck are you wearing? I was like, what?

I'm just curious. They the music industry has changed so much over our lifetime. Where back in the day, you know, you guys relied mostly on album sales, singles, that sort of thing. Talk to us about that. So you you you've come up in a digital age, so are you more looking for downloads? Like, what's the best way for for fans to support your music?

SPEAKER_03 14:41

Um for me personally, for the industry. There's two different we try to lose numbers here and get people to pay attention, or are we trying to make some money? Uh it depends. So um, yeah, it used to be uh it used to be record sales and and and um you know go buy you know before Spotify we still had uh it was iTunes. And you could actually still go spend 99 cents and uh buy your you know buy the your favorite artist or band's uh album or song, right? Um and then Spotify came along and just fucked everything. Including us. It's been yeah, yeah, there's it's been a bit of a change, man. It's it's um I can sit here and say that uh the best way to support me or any of your favorite artists or bands is to uh per the industry standard go listen on Spotify, but Spotify doesn't pay you.

Um it's like 0.3. It's like a third of a penny per stream. A million streams gets you like two two thousand bucks or something like that. Like there's Snoop Dogg's still like, where's my mic?

But the best way, I mean, in my opinion, I I would I would rather, and this I don't know. You gotta make money somehow, and it's 99 cents per single. You can still go on Apple, you know, it's Apple Music now and download, right? But it's more of a pain in the ass because even Apple Music is is so geared towards streaming. Um the best way that I can say you can support me or your or your favorite artist is to just follow, just keep up with what they're doing. Because in this in the business now, uh you don't you don't make money on your music. You spend money to create something that people hopefully will latch on to and you know stay with you on social media and come out to your shows and buy tickets and go to meet and greets, and that's the best way that you can support. You know, buy go to the merch table, buy a bunch of merch, you know, and I'm not saying this because uh you know, I'm trying to sell a pitch or anything like that. You know, it's just the artists nowadays, even big artists. I was listening to a uh an interview with Dustin Lynch um a couple months back, but he was like he was like, even when you're you know up on top of you know, get big and you get up you get up there, you still don't make shit out of your music. You know, so it's literally it's it's hard product, right? It's a physical sale of merch or tickets or even just the support really is the big thing because unfortunately everything's about numbers now, which I think is bullshit. Um if you don't have the Spotify numbers or the social media numbers, then no one's gonna pay attention, which I call bullshit on. Someone just got signed recently that doesn't have anywhere near the numbers that you should have to get signed. So I don't know, nobody nobody really knows on that aspect, but I can just say you know, give a follow, like and comment. And I'm trying to work really hard on commenting back to people. I'm fucking horrible about it.

But come to shows, come hang out. I want to I love to see, I'll be at every merch table after or before every single show that I play. And I love to hang out and you know, meet people and and take pictures and hear stories, and you know that's the that's what's worth it to me.

So we're not musical artists, but uh we you know we are performing in a sense here, and when we launched this podcast, the only way to get your hands on it was to get behind our paywall, which we had on on almost all platforms, right? And and that was nice, you know, income is good, but then we we had a problem where we'd want to attract sponsors or we want to attract guests like you, and they're like, what are your download numbers? And we're like, 12. So we got on iHeart, we got on Spotify, we got on Apple Music, we have a Roku television channel now, and we've opened these things up for free and taken a huge financial risk just to get the exposure for the podcast to get folks like you interested. Uh, we had Sonic Sonic Jim Sonifeld, the drummer from Hootie, was on uh last week or the week before. And people want to see, like you said, these numbers is what it's about, these downloads. And listen, even if we get a thousand downloads a month, our cut of that is seven dollars to split between the three of us. So it's it's it's a it's a catch-22. We're still figuring it out. We owe a lot to our Facebook subscribers. They are our meat and potatoes, they get the video version of this. Yeah, they're gonna get the uh Josh Gallagher strip show that most of you will not be getting on the regular platforms. But so we're trying to find a balance in a way like you. It's like we don't want to give out the farm, but in the other sense, we almost have to give out some of the farm in order to be sustainable. So it is it's kind of frustrating, but it's nice. What are we on, like 37 countries now, Jagger, or something like that?

It depends on how big of a Hardy fan you guys are, but uh um, but no, so I do um thank you for having me on, first of all. This is this is great, and congratulations on all your success. Um it is weird though, man. It's like you have to, like you just said, you have to take a cut of the farm, as you said, and give it away. Put it out there in hopes that people that is the pay. That's how you get paid. Right. In hopes that people will latch on to it and connect with it enough to stay with you long term, you know.

Yeah, we're just relying on word of mouth at this point instead of the guaranteed money that we knew was coming in. We're like I said, we still need our Facebook subscribers to keep it going, but yeah, we're just it's just a leap of faith, like it was for you, I'm sure, to pack it up, move down to Nashville. Oh, yeah. I mean, you've taken a lot of risks, right?

Oh yeah, yeah, a bunch. I mean, the day that I we packed the trailer up and drove 11 hours from Pennsylvania to here was the was the risk, but the reward is you know the reward is when you when you get to step on stage and hear you know, hundreds and if you're lucky, thousands of sometimes people singing all your shit right back to you. It's just yeah, it's the best, like it's the best fucking feeling in the world that you get to meet some of these people and hear their stories and how you how your music helped them or how it, you know, um you know really pulled at their heartstrings because they have kids or they like to drink beer and part. I don't know, you know, it's just so much there's so much uh there's so much stuff about it that I love. But I that's the way that you that's the big payoff is is just showing up and being being a fan and and uh and and and jumping on jumping on board of the ship and really latching onto it because that that's my favorite part to be honest with you well share some of your farm with us I did like to stand out for that March.

Some of your farm let's hear is it first one gonna be the original is this is there a story behind this one?
